Nathan Lawrence began studying music at the age of six, taking piano lessons under the instruction of his grandmother. He received his first violin lessons from Tim Shackelton of Cobleskill when he was nearly eleven and later went on to study with Camille Grace. He currently studies with Michael Emery of Schenectady and Erick Friedman of New Haven, CT. While studying music at Houghton College, Nathan studied with violinist Ellen Rathjen. Nathan graduated from Houghton in 1997 with a degree in Violin Performance.
Nathan's awards include that of finalist in the 1991 and 1992 Anthony R. Stefan Scholarship Competition, and second prize in 1993. He was the first-prize winner of both the 1991 and 1992 Teens-n'-Talent Competition for the North-East-North-America Area which was held in Toronto, Canada, and was the runner-up winner in 1993 for both the B. C. Pops Concerto Competition and the Houghton College Presidential Scholarship Competition. In 1992 he won the Lois Lyman Concerto Competition and was the featured soloist in the Empire State Youth Orchestra's March 1993 concert. Also in 1993, Nathan performed the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto with the Glens Falls Symphony as the first soloist in its Year of the Young Artist series under the direction of Hugh Wilson. During his sophomore year at Houghton, he was the winner of the college orchestra's Concerto/Aria Competition. In addition, Nathan was selected to perform in a recent masterclass of Ruggiero Ricci, one of this century's most celebrated violinists.
An active recitalist and performer, Nathan's concert activities have included numerous recitals and concerts in the Capital Region and throughout New York State. In 1996 he gave the premier performance of Mark Hijleh's Violin Concerto with the Houghton College Philharmonia. He has also held the position of assistant conductor of that orchestra. Nathan is currently a first violinist in the Schenectady, Catskill, and Utica Symphonies, the Skidmore Orchestra, and plays for other Capitol Region orchestras. Nathan plays weekly in church services in the Cobleskill area and, above all else, wants to give God the credit for all of his musical successes. In addition to teaching privately in the Cobleskill area, Nathan is also a violin instructor for the Schenectady County Community College's Music Preparatory School.
