One day my wife said to me, "Don't you think it's time for us to travel?" "OK, where do you want to go?" "Across the country." "What? We can't afford that. We can't stay at motels, it's too expensive." "Camp out!" "No. Who wants to camp out in the rain?" "You're pretty good at solving problems and thinking up things. So think." I did. Here was the solution:
I bought my third car on bid and purchased a four-door Ford. First I took the back seat out, then opened the trunk. Between the trunk and the back seat there was a steel "web" for support for the back seat. Using a hacksaw, I sawed the top and the bottom of both sides of the steel webbing and bent them back. Now, measuring the distance, I sawed a 4' x 8' sheet of 3/4-inch plywood so it would fit through the trunk up to the front seat--with the front seat moved fully forward. On top of that platform, I put a double sleeping bag with two air mattresses. Finally, to keep out tiny bugs and flies, I bought some very fine aluminum window screening. This was cut to fit the front and rear side windows and it was attached to the inside door window frames with, what else, but duct tape! My wife made some curtains and we pinned them to the underside of the roof, which, at that time, was made of cloth. Underneath the "bed" there was room for a camping stove, freezer chest, extra clothes and boots, emergency medical kit, and various other essentials. Now we had a motel on wheels. Farmers always used to call me the "idea guy." But thanks to Pop, there are no such words as "I can't do it."
