Cycle of Thanksgiving

The Iroquois celebrate the gifts of creation through a calendar of ceremonies which follow the changes of the seasons and the ripening of crops. These ceremonies are celebrated in the Longhouse. Although the sequence of the ceremonies may vary among longhouses, the annual cycle typically includes the following:

MIDWINTER (Jan-Feb) - Ganaha'owi - "Stirring the Ashes

MAPLE DANCE (March) - Hadichisto'ndas - "Putting in Syrup"

THUNDER DANCE (April) - Arrival of Our Grandfathers the Thunderers

SEED BLESSING (May) - Ganeha'ongwededwa'ye - "Our Seeds Be Bet"

SUN DANCE (May) - Give thanks to the Sun

GREEN BEAN DANCE (July) - Wainodetgowaso - Give thanks for the 1st of the Three Sisters

GREEN CORN DANCE (Aug-Sept) - Honondekwes - Give thanks for the ripening of Corn & Squash.

HARVEST DANCE (October) - Doyonunneoquana deohaka - "We put our substance away"

MAPLE FESTIVAL (Feb) - Forest Dance
 

ALL NIGHT DANCE (March/April) - Ohkiweh to honor the ancestors

HADUEH (April) - Medicine Mask Society
 

MOON DANCE (May)- Give thanks to Grandmother Moon
 

STRAWBERRY DANCE (June) - Wainodayo - Celebrate the ripening of the strawberry
