USING TEXTBOOKS SUCCESSFULLY THROUGH SQ3R
- Survey - take a quick look at the chapter. To find the main topics, read the headings, captions and summaries. Look at any charts, pictures and maps. After you have surveyed the chapter, you should be able to answer this question: What is the chapter/unit about?
- Question - change headings into questions. Write down 2 or 3 questions that you think the chapter might answer. Example: Heading - Acids and Bases. Questions formed might be: What is the difference between an acid and a base? Give some examples of each. What are some characteristics of each? What do I already know about this topic?
- Read - after you have formed the questions, read the entire section looking for the answers to your questions. Carefully read the parts of the paragraphs or notes that answer the questions you formed in the questioning stage of SQ3R. Pay particular attention to key words.
- Recite - after you are sure you know the answer to your question, say and write down the answer found in the chapter. Do not continue until you are able to answer the question. Take notes.
- Review - when you have finished studying, take a small break. Then go over the chapter or section answering the questions that you created. Look for any special details you want to remember. Star * the questions which you are unsure of and ask for help finding the answers to those questions.
