Historical Information

The Town of Blenheim is one of the original six towns created in Schoharie County. It was created in March 1797. Since then the Town of Jefferson was created in 1803 and part of the Town of Gilboa was taken off in 1848, leaving the Town of Blenheim with 21,561.6 acres. Blenheim has a very famous history, it is most known for the Covered Bridge. The Bridge was built in 1855 at a cost of $6,000.00. The covered bridge is 232 feet long and is the longest covered single-span wooden bridge in the world. Many famous people have come from Blenheim including N.Y.S. Governor John King, and more recently, N.Y.S. Secretary of State Gail Shaffer. In addition, Mr. Amos Loper was one of the firsts to sign the petition that created the Republican Party.
