CHILDREN’S SUMMER THEATER & MUSIC
CAMPS
![]()
Summer
youth programs have been sponsored at the renovated Borden Creamery – Depot
Lane Theater for many years. The Depot Lane Theater is a small “black box”
stage located on the second floor of the old creamery building and is an
integral part of the Depot Lane Complex. It is just one of many local historic
sites that Schoharie Colonial Heritage Association has renovated and makes
available to the public for cultural and other community events.
Each year, the
summer youth program at Depot Lane has explored different cultures through the
performing arts. Last year it was Folktales
from Asia. The theme of the
2008 performances was Tales from the British Isles and students
performed three one-act plays, based on stories from England and Ireland. One of the plays – The Laird’s
Daughter – was written by
Katie Farineau, a 14-year-old student who attends Schoharie Central School.
In addition, SCHA
also offered a Shakespeare Camp where students became immersed in the
life and times of William Shakespeare and learned how to read and speak lines
from some of the Bard’s most famous plays. The young thespians who participated in the camp appeared in
“Shakespeare Shorts” performing brief scenes from Romeo and Juliet, Twelfth
Night, Macbeth, As You Like It and others.
New in 2008 was the
Jazz It Up! Jazz Band Camp for students in 6th through 12th grades. Students with two years of band
experience had the opportunity to perform twice during the weeklong camp, once
at the Depot Lane Theater and once at the Schoharie Free Library.
Stay tuned for details about a Blues
Band Camp, Puppet-Making Workshops & Performances, and Shakespeare
Revisited for 2009!
These events were sponsored by Schoharie Colonial Heritage
Association and were made possible, in part, with public funds from the
Decentralization Program of the New York State Council on the Arts,
administered through the Tri-County Arts Council.
